Is Fencing Safe? What Parents Need to Know

It's the first question every parent asks — and it's the right one to ask.

Is fencing safe for my child?

The short answer: yes. Fencing is one of the safest Olympic sports in existence. But you shouldn't take our word for it — let's look at why.

The research is clear

Multiple studies have examined injury rates across Olympic and collegiate sports, and fencing consistently comes out at or near the bottom of the list.

Research published in the Journal of Sports Science and Medicine analyzed injury rates across several sports and found that fencing had the lowest rate of all the sports studied. The researchers attributed this to the sport's emphasis on protective equipment and its strict regulatory framework.

A separate study in the Journal of Athletic Training looked at collegiate fencing injuries over more than 15 years of data. Their finding: fencing injuries were rare, typically mild, and only about 3% required medical attention beyond basic first aid.

And when compared directly to other combat sports — boxing, judo, taekwondo — fencing's injury rate was significantly lower, according to research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

In practical terms, your child is statistically safer fencing than playing soccer, basketball, or even swimming.

Why fencing is so safe

It comes down to three things: equipment, rules, and culture.

The equipment is purpose-built for protection. Fencing masks are constructed from reinforced steel mesh and tested to withstand significant impact. Jackets and chest protectors are made from ballistic-grade materials like Kevlar. Gloves protect the weapon hand. And the weapons themselves are intentionally blunted — training blades have rubber tips, and competition weapons use spring-loaded buttons. Nothing is sharp. Nothing is designed to injure.

The rules leave very little to chance. Fencing has one of the most codified rule sets in all of sport. Right of way, target areas, legal actions — everything is precisely defined. Electric scoring equipment eliminates ambiguity. Referees enforce strict conduct standards. There is no gray area.

The culture reinforces safety from day one. Fencing has a centuries-old code of conduct built on control and mutual respect. Every bout begins and ends with a salute. Reckless behavior isn't just penalized — it's culturally unacceptable. This etiquette is passed down from coach to student, generation after generation, and it's one of the most powerful safety mechanisms in the sport.

What we do at PBFC

At Palm Beach Fencing Club, safety goes beyond the sport's built-in protections.

We regularly inspect all student equipment — masks, jackets, weapons, and body cords — for wear, damage, or anything that doesn't meet our standards. If a piece of gear isn't in proper condition, it doesn't get used.

We enforce strict safety protocols during every class, lesson, and camp session. Students wear full protective gear during all drills and bouts — no exceptions.

We teach safety and etiquette from the very first lesson. Before a new student ever picks up a weapon, they learn how to handle it safely, how to put on and check their gear, and how to conduct themselves on the strip with respect for their opponent.

Our coaches are Safe Sport Certified and trained in emergency response. We maintain appropriate coach-to-student ratios and keep first aid supplies on-site at all times.

And we maintain an open-door policy. Parents are welcome to watch any class, any time. We believe transparency is the foundation of trust.

The bottom line

No sport is 100% risk-free. But fencing comes remarkably close. The combination of advanced protective equipment, precise rules, electric scoring, and a deeply ingrained culture of control and respect makes it one of the safest physical activities your child can participate in — competitive or otherwise.

If safety is a concern that's been holding you back from trying fencing, we hope this puts your mind at ease. Come see it in person — you'll understand within five minutes why parents feel comfortable watching their kids compete.
